DSC for IceGate Return (Import & Export)
“The introduction of Indian Customs and Central Excise Electronic Commerce Gateway (ICEGATE) has helped the customs department become more accountable and thereby has eliminated the complaints on the delay in delivery of consignments of exporters as well as importers,” said chief commissioner of customs, J K Batra. |
ICEGATE is a portal that provides e-filing for the export and import trade. |
While addressing a programme on ‘Online Filing of Customs Documents through ICEGATE’ organized by the Federation of Indian Export Organisations (FIEO) in association with Air Customs, Batra said, “Exporters must use only the expertise of automated customs house agents to reduce the transaction cost.” |
Exporters and importers need to know the efficiency of Indian Customs Electronic Data Interchange system (ICES) and therefore monitor the performance of the customs house agents, he added. |
ICES is now operational in 30 major customs locations, handling nearly 75 per cent of India’s international trade in terms of import and export consignments. |
ICES is designed to transact with customs electronically in the form of filing bill of entry and shipping bill using electronic data interchange (EDI). |
A large number of documents, which trade, transport, and regulatory agencies need to submit or receive in the process of live customs clearance, are now being processed online. |
ICEGATE is an infrastructural project that fulfills the customs EDI and data communication requirements. ICEGATE runs on software that provides a variety of technological options to the trade with regard to communication and messaging standards. |
To ensure secure filing, digital signatures on the bill of entry and other documents will be used. For this purpose, a certificate authority is being set up for the issuance of digital signature certificates. |
